But first, let me explain how I discovered them.  

 

After I left college, I entered a leadership role in a different industry… 

 

At the world’s most profitable grocery store at the time… 

 

Early on, I started picking up habits I assumed were essential for a leader.

 

Some of these habits were part of the culture - we worked six days a week, usually 11 to 12 hour days.

 

This was just how we proved ourselves to others.

 

When I transitioned to Financial Services, I used that same work ethic - the willingness to work as hard as necessary - to be successful. 

 

Then I began working my way up to leadership again. 

 

Only this time, I was older and presumably wiser. 

 

I struggled balancing wanting to be a ‘top performer’ with my other responsibilities…    

 

I couldn’t see how I could spend time with family and friends without sacrificing my career. 

 

There was a lot of pressure to be in the office early and stay late. 

 

That’s what was necessary to prove I took my career seriously.

 

If you’re an owner or leader, I’m sure you’ve found yourself being the first one in and the last one out. Right?

 

Anyway, I continued working at full pace, neglecting my life outside of work.

 

Then, when I was 40, my dad passed away. 

 

The last year of his life, he was in assisted living, having suffered several strokes and requiring round-the-clock care. 

 

He no longer consistently remembered or knew who we were. 

 

I delivered his eulogy at his funeral. 

 

But to be honest, I got through the last few months on autopilot.

 

It didn’t really sink in until my sister sent me some photos of us kids at dad’s funeral… 

 

What hit me straight away was my appearance… 

 
I could see how much weight I’d gained from the stress of my dad’s last year, my career, and the coping mechanisms I used - including food and wine.

 

I knew something had to change.

 

But instead of targeting the root issue... 

 

By cutting down stress, and creating a work-life balance… 

 

I targeted the symptoms… 

 

A close friend of mine suggested we ‘get back in shape together’. 

 

So we did. 

 

That meant finding a gym that opened at 4am. 

 

So I could still be at my desk by 6 or 6:30am. And get a good amount of work done before heading home.

 

Although I was getting into great physical shape, I was still dedicating an enormous amount of time to work. 

 

Family came second. 

 

And sleep came dead last. 

 

However, something happened in the following year that changed everything.
 

We started hosting exchange kids. Teens that came to spend a year in America.

We wanted to be a dedicated family to them. 

 

So we all made a commitment to be at the dinner table every night together. 

 

As a family, without our electronic devices or the television 

 

That meant leaving work on time every day. 

At the same time, I joined the CrossFit community. 

 

Because CrossFit is taught as a class with a coach, there was no more 4am start time. 

 

The earliest class was at 5:30am. This pushed my early work day to “nearly normal”. 

 

I was officially bookended with a “fixed” start and stop every day. I could no longer treat time as a variable. 

Before, my team admired that I was willing to work as hard as they did in all the roles and tasks they had to do. 

 

But now I was limiting my work day, I had to find a streamlined way to lead my team and continue to hold their respect… 

 

It took me decades to get to that point, but I now knew hard work wasn’t enough. 

I had no choice but to make a change.

 

I took everything I discovered over my entire leadership career…

 

And condensed it into these 6 keys… 

 

So I could get more done in less time…  

 

Get the best work out of my team… 

 

And easily find and hold onto superstar team members.

This process helped me to unlock my own “Leadership Genius.”
